Dongshi experiences bountiful honeydew harvest

The arrival of summer brought with it a bumper crop of sweet, juicy honeydew melons.
Dongshi Honeydew Melon in Zhijiang, highly prized for its sweetness, crisp texture and rich aroma, is a favorite for beating the summer heat.
On May 20, Dongshi town held its third annual ceremony to celebrate the harvest of honeydew melons, attracting wholesalers across the country to purchase here.
A new variety of high-quality melons, ‘Dong City Melon No. 1’, was cultivated last year with technical guidance from the Hubei Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The first batch of ‘Dongshi Melon No. 1’ will be officially launched this month.
The melon has over 10 varieties. In addition to the Dongshi Honeydew Melon 1, others such as Cuiyu, Jingdian and Tian Tian are also popular when they come on the market.
Currently, there are over 660 hectares of honeydew planted in Dongshi town, and more than 3,000 locals are involved in the industry.
