The Cross-Strait Guan Gong Worship Ceremony at Guan Yu's tomb in Dangyang was held on September 27 in Yichang. This also marked the beginning of the Hubei Dangyang Guanling Temple Fair which will run through October 7.
Representatives of overseas Chinese from Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and China’s Macau and Taiwan came together to pay tribute to the legendary general of the Three Kingdoms era (220 – 280), which is widely regarded by Chinese across the world as the revered Historical Saint Guan Yu.
Guan Yu (also known as Guan Gong) is best known for his bravery, loyalty, and honor. He is often depicted as a powerful warrior with an iconic sword, the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, which was said to be able to cut through mountains and rivers. After his death in 199 AD, he became a revered figure in Chinese Buddhism and Taoism, with millions of followers worshiping him as a saint and protector.
His tomb in Dangyang is also known as Guanling, which is one of the three major Guan temples in China, the other two being in Henan and Shanxi provinces. Every year during autumn, Dangyang holds a grand ceremony to promote Guan Gong’s cultural heritage, highlighting the spirit of loyalty, righteousness, benevolence, courage, propriety, wisdom, and trust that Guan Yu embodied.
