Yichang’s water environment cooperation efforts with three neighboring cities have made significant progress in protecting the quality of rivers in the region.
The Juzhang River is a tributary of the Yangtze and flows through Xiangyang, Yichang, Jingmen and Jingzhou. In 2021, Yichang signed a cooperative agreement with Jingzhou, Jingmen and Enshi to jointly protect and govern the Juzhang and nearby rivers. Over the past three years, these cities have carried out a series of exchanges and cooperative efforts in ecological and environmental protection.
The legislative bodies of Jingmen, Jingzhou, Xiangyang and Yichang drafted four coordinated local regulations for the protection of the Juzhang River, which were approved by the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress of the Hubei Province. These regulations will take effect in January of next year.

On November 15, Yichang and Jingzhou conducted a joint emergency drill for water pollution, simulating a diesel truck overturning on a bridge over the Juzhang River, spilling diesel into the water. The successful completion of this exercise strengthened the two cities’ collaborative emergency response to such incidents.
These participating cities have teamed to supervise the discharge of polluted water into rivers, manage the water quality of smaller rivers and jointly oversee key watersheds.
From January to October this year, the water quality at 107 of 117 sections in Yichang, Jingzhou, Jingmen and Enshi met good or excellent standards. The water quality at the Yangtze River between Enshi and Jingzhou, the Qing River between Enshi and Yichang and the Han River section in Jingmen have consistently remained at Class II, indicating that it is suitable for first-class protected areas for centralized drinking water sources or for areas protecting rare aquatic animals.
