Yichang powers up rural economy with thriving agricultural E-commerce

Yichang's agricultural e-commerce sector is booming, generating over 11.55 billion yuan (approximately US$1.6 billion) in transactions in 2024. As of May 8, 2025, the city is home to 8,518 agricultural e-commerce entities, according to the Yichang Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
After several years of developing, Yichang has built a robust e-commerce logistics systems across its counties, townships, and villages, resulting in the establishment of five national and six provincial e-commerce demonstration counties.
Innovations like livestreaming are transforming traditional farmers into internet celebrities, fostering new avenues of wealth generation.
Among standout performers, Zigui County has earned recognition as the only national leading e-commerce county in Hubei Province. Meanwhile, Dangyang City has been designated a national demonstration zone for rural e-commerce and express delivery.
"50% of the county's navel oranges are now sold at better prices through local e-commerce companies," said Shi Lei, Deputy Director of Zigui County’s Bureau of Economy and Information Technology. He stated that the county's e-commerce sector has expanded to over 2,600 enterprises and more than 8,100 online stores, employing over 60,000 people and generating annual sales of 5 billion yuan.
Looking ahead, Yichang plans to solidify its e-commerce leadership by investing in training for network anchors and content creators. The city will continue to organize impactful online events, such as the Spring Tea Festival and Citrus Festival, to further promote its distinct local agricultural products.
