Local organizations help people with disabilities find jobs, learn skills

To mark China’s National Disability Day on May 18, several charity organizations from Xiling District were introduced to highlight their efforts in supporting people with disabilities.
At a special store in Taifu Plaza featuring products made by individuals with disabilities, five new product lines were launched: Yichang color pottery, mini dough sculptures, traditional Chinese medicine healthcare items, woven fabrics, and paintings.

The store now offers products across 10 categories and 37 subcategories, including color pottery, hand sanitizers, mixed incense, and mini dough sculptures, many of which incorporate elements of intangible cultural heritage.
Among the contributors is the Mingzhu Color Pottery Cultural Development Center, which has trained 25 disabled individuals, helping them learn the skills of Yichang color pottery and secure employment. The center has generated over 50,000 yuan (US$6,940) in total income.

Another organization showcased in the store is Xingchu Disabled Persons' Studio, established in April 2017. It produces a range of products, including shampoo, laundry liquid, pandemic-prevention incense, and Chinese medicine healthcare items. The studio also offers day care for people with disabilities and organizes rehabilitation and recreational activities.
To date, the studio has created 40 jobs for individuals with disabilities, providing them with income and opportunities to acquire new skills. Its sales have consistently increased, with cumulative revenue nearing 2 million yuan.

Additionally, the Zhicheng Disabled Persons’ Service Center, established in November 2019, is the first live broadcast base for people with disabilities in Hubei Province. This private organization, associated with the Xiling Disabled Persons’ Federation, offers handicraft training, rehabilitation, day care, and employment opportunities, along with live broadcast training courses that have produced several online streamers with disabilities.

Xiao Yan, chairperson of the Xiling Disabled Persons' Federation, noted that such "homes for people with disabilities" have provided employment for more than 300 disabled individuals in the district.
