About 6.28 million fish fry were released into the Yangtze River in Yichang on Friday in an effort to continue enriching the local ecosystem.

In the first half of this year, Yichang's agricultural authority released 24,600 Chinese sturgeon, along with nearly 200,000 other rare and common fish species, such as the high-fin banded shark.

“Releasing fish fry is one of the most effective ways to restore local fishery resources,” said Yi Xianchao, an official of Yichang's agricultural authority. “It helps replenish fish stocks, restore ecological balance, and improve aquatic ecosystems.”

According to Yi, more unique species were released in the Yichang section of the Yangtze River this time compared to previous attempts.

“Native species will become the focus of Yichang’s future releases,” he said.

Located along the Yangtze River, Yichang boasts abundant fish resources, including the Chinese sturgeon, the Yangtze sturgeon, and the finless porpoise, which are all under first-class national protection.

Since a 10-year fishing ban was imposed on the Yangtze River on January 1, 2021, the aquatic ecosystems around Yichang City have shown signs of steady recovery.
