Yichang, situated on the Yangtze River, is promoting green development for inland waterway shipping along China’s "golden waterway."

Green Engine for the Yangtze

Wuhan Weimai New Energy Power Co., Ltd. in Zigui County has launched the nation’s first production line for battery packs for new energy ships.

The company supplies power batteries for 60 percent of China's new energy vessels and sets industry standards with its patented immersion cooling technology.

The Changjiang Sanxia 1, the world's largest electric cruise ship, features four battery compartments that store energy equivalent to more than 100 electric vehicles. Li Xingheng from the State Grid Yichang Power Supply Company said a high-voltage charging system and a low-voltage supplementary system were developed to efficiently meet the ship's energy needs.

Yichang Shipbuilding Industrial Park, Hubei Province's largest new energy vessel construction base, is home to 10 shipbuilding companies. In 2025, the park received 114 orders, with 87 percent for new energy ships.

By the end of 2024, Yichang will have built 84 new energy ships, establishing itself as a leader along the Yangtze River. By 2026, the park aims to produce over 300 green vessels annually, targeting an industry output of 50 billion yuan (about $6.9 billion).

Green Services for Shipping

Yichang's 232-kilometer stretch of the Yangtze River handles nearly 60,000 ship transits annually. Since 2019, the "JingXiaoYi" pollution management system has processed about 400 pollution transport requests each day.

Twelve pollution reception terminals and 49 transfer ships are currently in operation. In 2024, the system managed 3,624 tons of onboard waste, 264,000 cubic meters of domestic sewage, and over 6,000 cubic meters of oily waste water, significantly reducing the river's ecological burden.

Green Riverbank for Yichang City

Yichang is protecting the Yangtze River by removing 15 cargo terminals, relocating 134 businesses, and restoring 8 kilometers of riverside landscape, which has improved ecology and water quality.

The city is promoting sustainable Yangtze River shipping through new energy ships, pollution management, and riverbank restoration.
