Yichangbei Railway Station will feature a large solar power system designed to power itself.

The station, which means the north railway station of Yichang, will soon be the city’s new major passenger train hub. On June 15, it served as the debut venue for the CR450 Electric Multiple Unit, the world's fastest bullet train.

On the ceiling of the station’s second-floor waiting hall, blue and white diamond-shaped aluminum panels are connected to form a continuous surface.

A total of 4,639 monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic power generation components have been installed across the ceiling. These devices will provide green energy for the station’s air conditioning, lighting, and elevators and other facilities, according to Zhuang Xiang, chief engineer of the China Railway Construction Engineering Group Yichangbei Station project.

Hua Cong, head of the Yichangbei Railway Station project's technical department, said that the station is designed to power itself. The rooftop photovoltaic project covers an area of approximately 36,000 square meters, with a total installed capacity of 2.69 megawatts. After commencing operations, the annual power generation will reach 2.3 million kWh — enough to power 2,200 households for a year.

Deng Wei, the technical representative for the photovoltaic project, noted: "This innovative technology is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,860 tons, equivalent to planting approximately 102,000 trees."

The Yichangbei Railway Station's waiting hall covers nearly 40,000 square meters, more than three times the size of Yichang East Railway Station, currently the main passenger rail hub in Yichang. It's designed to accommodate 5,000 passengers simultaneously at peak hours with significantly higher efficiency for entry and security check.
