As a heat wave sweeps across much of China, Yichang’s scenic spots are drawing crowds with their cool temperatures, dense forests, fresh air and fun outdoor activities.

Zhenzi Township in Xingshan County lies 100 kilometers north of downtown Yichang. It boasts an average elevation of 1,300 meters, 92 percent forest coverage and excellent air quality. The area receives about 240,000 visitors each year, generating more than 40 million yuan (US$5.59 million) in tourism revenue.

Qinggangping Health Resort, also perched at 1,000 meters above sea level, maintains an average summer temperature of 19 degrees Celsius with 95 percent forest coverage. The 40,000-square-meter resort is a 200 million yuan (US$27.96 million) investment, featuring 217 guest rooms, a 300-seat cafeteria, a rehabilitation center, and multiple activity areas. It can host up to 500 visitors daily.

In addition to mountain resorts, Yichang also offers river rafting and exciting water tourism.

Jiuwanxi in Zigui features a 6.4-kilometer rafting route, while Chaotianhou in Xingshan features a 12-kilometer route, both with fast-flowing currents and thrilling drops. In contrast, Huanghuang Drift in Yuan’an County features a shallower, slow-moving drift route, ideal for families and casual adventurers.
