The 2025 China Green Energy Development Conference is scheduled to take place in Yichang from October 22 to 24. This will mark the second time, following 2023, that this national industry event has chosen the city as its venue, reflecting the city's remarkable achievements in green energy development across multiple sectors.

This year also marks the fifth anniversary of China’s “Dual Carbon” strategy, which aims to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Yichang's abundant green power resources have earned it the title of "Capital of Clean Energy.” The city hosts 454 hydropower stations, including the iconic Three Gorges and Gezhouba Dams, with a combined capacity of 27.79 million kW, producing 10 percent of China's green hydropower from just 0.2 percent of its land area.

Additionally, its seven pumped-storage power stations, with an installed capacity of 10.6 million kilowatts, lead all prefecture-level cities in central China. The city also boasts 7.42 trillion cubic meters of proven shale gas reserves, among the highest in the country.

To further strengthen its position in the green energy sector, Yichang has transformed into a major hub for new energy manufacturing. Leveraging its rich natural resources - 15 percent of China's total phosphate reserves and 10 percent of its graphite resources – the city has attracted leading enterprises such as CATL's Brunp Recycling, Dongfeng Motor's Sunwoda EVB, and CORNEX New Energy. Together, these companies are building a comprehensive new-energy battery industry chain with a planned capacity of 200 GWh.

Yichang's commitment to green energy is also exemplified in its shipping industry. As a key hub along the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the city has revolutionized its shipbuilding sector, which now accounts for over 50 percent of Hubei Province's civil vessel production with a capacity of 1.3 million deadweight tons.

Notable achievements include a series of world-class innovations such as the world's largest pure electric ship, the Yangtze River Three Gorges No. 1, with new-energy vessels now representing over 80 percent of total ship orders. The city has also led in green port operations, with all commercial terminals equipped with shore power and its port shore-power technical standards being elevated to the national standard.

These achievements in renewable energy development and industrial upgrading have made Yichang a model for sustainable urban development and a fitting choice to host the Green Energy Development Conference for a second time. This year's conference will focus on emerging technologies such as new energy storage and green hydrogen production, offering Yichang a platform to share its expertise and contribute to global energy transition efforts.
