Yichang's online retail sector surged during the “Double Eleven” period, with sharp increases in both sales and express delivery operations. The event, held annually around November 11, is China's largest online shopping festival, surpassing the combined sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States.

Between November 13 and 14, Yichang's daily express parcel volume reached about 2.8 million items. In Zigui County alone, the overall express business volume is expected to increase by 10 to 12 percent year-on-year.

"We're renovating our home, so I took advantage of the 'Double Eleven' promotions to order a bathroom cabinet early," said Yao Xiao. The promotional event saved her about 1,500 yuan (US$211).

Yu Huafeng, Planning Director of Yichang Jindongshan Home Furnishing & Building Materials Plaza, said: "Through integrated online and offline promotions, our mall saw sales increase by over 180 percent compared to regular days, with home appliances performing particularly well."

At Yichang Ouke Trading Co., Ltd. workers were busy packaging Zigui navel oranges for overseas markets. "Positive feedback on our online store has boosted sales significantly. Online sales now account for more than 50 percent of our total revenue," said General Manager Hu Jingang. "During this year's 'Double Eleven' period, we have sold approximately 15,000 tons of navel oranges, with daily shipments rising from the usual 50 tons to 75 tons."

In the first 10 months of this year, the city's retail and wholesale companies achieved online retail sales of 10.56 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of nearly 16 percent, according to the Yichang Commerce Department. Online retail sales accounted for 16.2 percent of total retail sales, up 2.7 percentage points from the same period last year. The number of designated e-commerce enterprises reached 607, an increase of 109 compared to the same period last year.
