Yichang's wetlands cover 82,400 hectares

The city of Yichang is home to a vast and ecologically vital wetland network totaling 82,400 hectares, according to the city's Forestry and Landscaping Bureau.

The system includes eight nationally designated wetland parks, underscoring its significant environmental value. These diverse wetlands, encompassing rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and marshes, perform crucial functions such as water purification, flood control, and biodiversity conservation.

Several sites have received high-level recognition. The Ju River in Yuan'an County is designated as a wetland of national importance, while the Qinglong Lake in Dangyang, the Qing River in Changyang, and the Jinhu Lake in Zhijiang are recognized as wetlands of provincial importance.

Beyond conservation, the Bureau is advancing an integrated approach that incorporates traditional ecological knowledge into wetland management. By drawing on historical farming and fishing practices, the wetlands are being developed into spaces that serve both ecological and cultural functions, preserving local heritage alongside natural habitats.

This strategy also enhances urban life. Wetlands within the city, such as Canal Park, the Bailin River, and the Juanqiao River, have become popular green spaces where residents regularly connect with nature.

In addition, Yichang is working with Jingzhou, Jingmen, and Enshi to jointly promote wetland protection and cultural development.
