A major power transmission and transformation project has been fully completed, effectively easing electricity supply bottlenecks in Yichang’s urban area.

The Huaxiang 220-kilovolt power transmission and transformation project, the first major power grid project under Yichang's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), includes a 220 kV Huaxiang substation and several supporting 110 kV transmission lines. The new project adds 480 MVA of transformer capacity.

Rapid population and industrial growth have placed increasing pressure on the power grid. During the summer peak of 2024, the city’s two main substations both operated at over 90 percent of their total transformer capacity. After the Huaxiang substation came online in May 2025 and connected with seven 110 kV substations, the grid remained stable through peak summer demand.

After the completion of the project, the 110 kV power grid in Yichang's urban area has been fully optimized and can meet the city’s growing electricity demands.
