China Three Gorges University (CTGU) officially inaugurated the Hubei Provincial Institute for Excellent Engineers on May 26. As the first institute of its kind among provincial universities in Hubei, it features a distinctive focus on hydropower and electric power.
The new institute aims to serve major national hydropower projects while supporting Hubei’s modern energy, chemical, and healthcare industries. The initiative is designed to address key challenges in engineering education, including the gap between academic training and industrial needs, while strengthening students’ practical and innovation capabilities.

To promote deeper university-enterprise collaboration, certificates were awarded to 53 council member organizations during the event. Key partners include the Changjiang River Scientific Research Institute, State Grid Hubei Electric Power Research Institute, Hubei Xingfa Chemicals Group, and Angel Yeast Co., Ltd.
Breaking away from traditional departmental structures, the college will adopt a “one mainstay, two wings” model, with hydropower and electric power as its core disciplines, supported by energy and chemical engineering and biomedical sciences. The curriculum will feature project-based learning, a dual-mentor system, and a work-study alternation model, enabling students to solve real-world industrial challenges and strengthen hands-on skills.
During the inauguration ceremony, experts from leading institutions, including Southeast University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, shared best practices for developing national-level excellent engineer colleges.
Looking ahead, the new college aims to become a nationally influential talent hub for hydropower engineering and a leader in the energy, chemical, and biomedical fields. It also seeks to develop a replicable and scalable model for excellent engineer education across provincial universities.
