This weekend, Yichang is transforming into a bustling crossroads of sports and music, testing its ability to turn a surge of visitors into long-term gains.
More than 80,000 out-of-town visitors are expected to converge on the city for four major events: the National College Basketball League (CUBAL) finals, a three-night concert by Chinese singer-songwriter Wang Sulong (Silence Wang), Yichang’s home match against Enshi in the 2026 Hubei City Football League, and the local dragon boat races.

The CUBAL tournament, China’s premier university basketball competition, features 32 teams, including those from Tsinghua and Peking University. Meanwhile, Wang’s Age of Romance World Tour has sold out 105,000 tickets, 77 percent of which were purchased by fans outside of Yichang.

The 2026 Yichang Dragon Boat League kicked off on May 30 in the waters near the Three Gorges Cruise Center. The event features both the University Dragon Boat Open and the Yichang Dragon Boat League, bringing together teams from 12 universities and 14 counties and districts across Yichang.

But beyond passing this immediate stress test, Yichang is pursuing a broader goal: turning weekend visitor traffic into lasting development momentum.
Under the Yiling Yangtze River Bridge, free weekend concerts have become a popular local attraction, complementing the city’s large-scale events. At the basketball games, food tours and cultural markets have been introduced to turn spectator trips into immersive experiences. Concertgoers can also enjoy exclusive discounts at scenic spots and restaurants across the city.
