About 5,000 large drones took to the night sky over the Yangtze River tonight, staging an aerial light show to mark China's National Day and the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Drones form a pattern marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China over the Yangtze River in Yichang, Hubei province, on Oct. 2, 2026.

With the sky as a screen and the river as a backdrop, the drones moved through a sequence of formations: a pattern celebrating the 77th anniversary, the Three Gorges Dam, the peaks and waters of the Xiling Gorge and other iconic Yichang landmarks. The show paired National Day greetings with landmarks of Yichang.

Spectators crowded the riverfront, many holding up phones to record the display.

The performance came on the second day of the seven-day National Day holiday, as the city reported a surge in tourist arrivals. It drew extra crowds to the riverside after dark and added a nighttime draw to the city's holiday offerings.
