Meet the dragon boat maker and master

In Zigui, dragon boat makers have completed more than 10 hand-crafted wooden boats for this year's race. Zheng Xianglong, an inheritor of Yichang’s dragon boat craftsmanship, both builds and races the boats. He explains the intricate process, from material selection and lofting to carving the dragon head, caulking, polishing, and painting scales. Colombian student Victor Martinez tried his hand at the craft to better understand Zheng's passion.
