Tongren: The 'spirit' of Fanjing Mountain - Guizhou snub-nosed monkey

The Guizhou snub-nosed monkey’s only habitat is located in Fanjing Mountain National Nature Reserve in Tongren City, Guizhou Province, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Situated on the main peak of the Wuling Mountains, this reserve has a primeval forest coverage rate of 97% and is one of the best-preserved subtropical native ecosystems at the same latitude in the world.

Fanjing Mountain’s unique terrain and climate provide a core activity zone for the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey at elevations between 1,400 and 2,200 meters, making it a "natural refuge" for the species' survival. According to data from the Administration Bureau of Guizhou Fanjing Mountain National Nature Reserve, as of December 2025, there were only about 850 Guizhou snub-nosed monkeys living in Fanjing Mountain.
