Yichang Declaration unveiled at Gorge Canyon Fjord Tourism Summit

A declaration promoting sustainable tourism in gorge, canyon and fjord regions worldwide was released on September 6 in Yichang. Known as the Yichang Declaration on Sustainable Tourism Development in Gorge, Canyon and Fjord Regions of the World, it was adopted at the Gorge Canyon Fjord Tourism Summit and praised by participants as embodying “Yichang wisdom.”

The summit, a core event of the Gorge Canyon Fjord Tourism Carnival, brought together nearly 200 experts and scholars from China, Austria, Italy, East Africa and other regions to discuss ecological protection, cultural exchange and brand building.

The event highlighted the unique natural and cultural resources, which is the home of Xiling Gorge of the Yangtze River. Experts emphasized that canyon tourism not only meets people’s desire to explore nature, but also promotes regional cooperation, boosts local economies, and improves community livelihoods.

Guests also experienced Yichang firsthand through a Yangtze River night cruise and by attending the opening of the China Three Gorges International Tourism Festival, experiencing both the city’s cultural depth and modern vitality.

Professor Karl Wöber, President of the International Tourism Research Academy Council, praised Yichang’s ecological and cultural strengths, calling it a city with the potential to become a global model of sustainable canyon tourism.

The summit was guided by the International Tourism Studies Association (ITSA) and co-hosted by the Yichang Municipal People’s Government and the Geoscience Tourism Branch of the China Tourism Association.
